HECHO Backs the Rio Reimagined Project: Empowering Hispanic Communities in Phoenix

In the heart of the bustling urban landscape of Phoenix lies a hidden treasure - the Rio Salado, also known as the Salt River, and its larger mainstem, the Gila River. For thousands of years, these waterways were the lifeblood for Indigenous people residing in central Arizona, including the Akimel and Piipaash. Today, their modern-day descendants, the Gila River Indian Community and Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community, cherish their rich heritage and the land they call home.

The Rio Reimagined Project is a visionary initiative that embraces this history while offering enormous benefits to the diverse Hispanic communities in Maricopa County. HECHO (Hispanics Enjoying Camping, Hunting, and the Outdoors) stands in full support of this transformative endeavor and recognizes the leaders of Arizona championing this initiative – including Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema.

Why Rio Reimagined Matters to Hispanic Communities:

  • Economic Impact: The project is projected to inject millions of dollars into the local economy, creating jobs and opportunities in the surrounding Hispanic communities. This economic growth will empower local residents and improve their quality of life.

  • Educational Opportunities: The initiative will include a focus on providing educational opportunities for all communities. It aims to inspire and engage young minds by introducing them to the environmental and cultural riches of the region.

  • Recreation Access: Rio Reimagined plans to provide easy access to recreational spaces along the river corridors. This means that local Hispanic families will have more opportunities for outdoor activities and quality family time.

  • Cultural Preservation: By reviving and protecting cultural and physical history, the project directly preserves the unique heritage of Hispanic communities in the region. It ensures that the rich traditions and historical significance of these communities are passed down to future generations.

  • Environmental Protection: Protecting the rivers' ecosystems ensures a cleaner, healthier environment for everyone. A healthier environment means a healthier community and Hispanic residents will benefit from improved air and water quality.

The spirit of collaboration that drives the Rio Reimagined Project is evident in the Rio Partnership. This informal coalition of public, private, and non-profit organizations has been working tirelessly, sharing resources and building a shared vision of a more sustainable future.

HECHO is proudly in support of the Rio Reimagined Project. The project is a testament to what can be achieved when communities come together to honor their history, celebrate their land, and safeguard their future. By revitalizing these precious river corridors, the initiative connects us with our cultural roots, revitalizes ecosystems, and creates opportunities for the communities that have called this region home for generations.
