HECHO (Hispanics Enjoying Camping Hunting and the Outdoors), in partnership with City of Mesa Councilmember David Luna, the Arizona Game & Fish Department, and the City of Mesa Parks and Recreation hosted the first Free Family Fishing Day of 2020 at Red Mountain Lake on February 1, 2020.

More than 300 people attended, with loaner poles distributed to families who did not have their own, and volunteers teaching newbies the ropes on how to catch a fish. Fishing licensing fees were waived, and a great time was had by all who joined in the fun. Prizes were also raffled as community members won new fishing poles and tackles, while learning about fishing and conservation practices.

HECHO Spokeswoman and Coconino County Supervisor, Elizabeth Archuleta, shared with attendees the importance of practicing nature-based traditions like fishing, including the importance of practicing stewardship.

“We must not only practice stewardship, but encourage a legacy of stewardship for future generations,” Archuleta said.

Prior to the event, Councilmember David Luna shared his excitement about Free Family Fishing Day and the collaboration between the HECHO and the Arizona Game and Fish Department, as well as City of Mesa Parks and Recreation Department in an interview with Fox 10 News Phoenix.

“Some of my fondest memories are the times I’d go to a pond where my brothers and I would fish,” Councilmember David Luna shared. “It was a bonding experience for all of us. These traditions are embedded in my history and compel me to act for the preservation of open spaces in urban areas in the district where I serve, like Red Mountain Lake,” Councilmember Luna said.

In addition to teaching conservation practices, Free Family Fishing Days highlight the importance of access to the outdoors within urban areas. Open spaces mean that future generations can continue to build connection through nature-based activities, like fishing and enjoy our natural landscapes.
