Statement: Desecration of Petroglyphs in the Caja del Rio

HECHO (Hispanics Enjoying Camping, Hunting, and the Outdoors) stands in solidarity with our Tribal brothers and sisters during this difficult time and mourns the desecration of the ancient and beautiful petroglyph site near La Cieneguilla in Santa Fe County. While this vandalism violated a tribal cultural site, let us not forget that the area of the Caja del Rio exhibits a convergence of cultures and a history that is special to us all. This terrible act also highlights the importance and urgency of protecting sites that tell an important story of our history and allows us all to stay in touch with who we are and how we got here. The sanctity and spirit of these places allows us to reach into the past and commune with generations past and, if protected and preserved, will allow generations yet unborn to do the same.

HECHO is a proud member of the coalition to protect the Caja del Rio.
