By: Breanna González, Colorado Field Coordinator for HECHO

Rock climbing is an exhilarating and challenging sport that requires strength, endurance, and mental focus. Whether you're a seasoned climber or just starting, there's always something new to learn and explore.

In 2020, I relocated to Colorado, a state known for its striking natural beauty and great outdoors. In this state of incredible landscapes, I embarked on a journey of self-discovery by taking up the thrilling activity of rock climbing.

My partner, an enthusiastic rock climber, encouraged and inspired me to try it out. As someone who grew up in a large city, I had never had the chance to experience rock climbing or nature during my childhood. Initially, I hesitated to try it because it was new to me, and it seemed like a risky activity. However, it turned out to be an empowering experience that enabled me to face my fears and grow in numerous ways.

The most rewarding part of rock climbing is the sense of accomplishment and adventure that comes with pushing yourself to new heights and overcoming challenges. Whether you're climbing a towering peak or just working on a difficult route at your local gym, the feeling of reaching the top and looking out at the world below is truly unforgettable.

If you're looking for an exciting and challenging way to stay active and explore the great outdoors, give rock climbing a try. With the right mindset, skills, and equipment, there's no limit to what you can achieve.

Here are some tips for rock climbing.

Rock Climbing Tips:

1. Always prioritize safety. Ensure you have the right gear and equipment and know how to use it properly.

2. Find a group of people you trust. Consider joining a climbing club or a group at your local gym to meet new people who share your interests.

3. Do your homework. Understand the different types of climbing, such as bouldering and sport climbing, and what your personal preferences are.

4. Build your confidence in an indoor environment. Before venturing outdoors, make sure you feel comfortable and confident climbing indoors.

5. When you're ready to climb outside, go with someone more experienced than you who can guide you and ensure your safety.

6. Start with more accessible routes and work your way up. It's important gradually to build up your strength, endurance, and mental focus.

7. Know the area. Check the weather and understand the area where you'll be climbing, including the difficulty level and accessibility.

8. Ask professionals for advice on gear and equipment and consider buying second-hand gear to save money.

9. Look for local events that offer free guest passes or classes for first-time climbers.

Remember to listen to your body and take things at your own pace, and above all, have fun and enjoy the adventure!
