In 2015, the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) released 2,422 acres of U.S. Forest Service land that will allow the Rio Tinto and BPH mining companies to develop the Resoltuion Copper min in the Tonto National Forest. This past March, Representative Raúl Grijalva introduced the Save Oak Flat Act (H.R. 1884) which would repeal that release and permanently protect Chi'chil Bildagoteel, also known as the Oak Flat area of the Tonto National Forest, from mining proposals.

The proposed mine would:

  • Result in a 1,000-foot deep by 1.8-mile-wide crater that will destroy Oak Flat and will leave a 40,000-acre footprint;

  • Leave a permanent toxic dump of 1.37 billion tons of mining waste left behind after the mining company has left; and

  • Use at least 775,000-acre feet of water, much of that being pumped from groundwater

We need you to urge your congressional representative to cosponsor the Save Oak Flat Act to permantly protect Chi'chil Bildagoteel, which is a sacred site for the San Carlos Apache Tribe and other Tribal communities in the area.
